Aiseag - PRS New Music Biennial

A' Chiad Fhèill Dà-bhliadhnail Nàiseanta PRSF 'Aiseag' - Watercolour Music, Àrd Ghobhair June 2014 – All Aboard! As part of the cultural celebrations for Glasgow’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games 2014, the PRS for Music Foundation has joined forces with Creative Scotland and the other arts councils in the UK and Northern Ireland to create the first ever UK-wide New Music Biennial. 20 composers, 6 of them from Scotland, have been selected from a highly-competitive field to bring to life bold and adventurous new musicial ideas in collaboration with other artists at home and across the Commonwealth.

Mary Ann Kennedy has been inspired by the communities, culture and connections on her own doorstep, celebrating an international dynamic by hooking up with one of Canada’s most respected composers Scott Macmillan, Watercolour Music’s resident producer Nick Turner, and Gaelic poet Aonghas MacNeacail, to create a unique new work which will place the Highlands and the Gaelic language and culture right at the heart of the Games’ celebrations.

The new work will also be broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and released as a download on the NMC label. ‘Aiseag’ (The Ferryboat) takes an epic poem by Aonghas and carries the audience on a voyage of connections – between people, between cultures, across lochs and across oceans. Mary Ann’s vision is inspired by the network of ferries, small and large that play their trade down the west coast of Highland Scotland, and the Martime and inland shores of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island. The ferryboat becomes a symbol of the potency of human connection and understanding, and of the voyage through life from beginning to beyond
